They say the recession is almost over
But now regression has taken over
Our mere wills to survive..
The will to conquer has died..
Because it’s been too long and it hit too hard
How do you smile thinking your kids might starve
Because unemployment benefits benefit not
And eviction notices are blowing up your spot
And it’s cold outside
Gotta cry inside..
Don’t want your tears to be freeze framed
Tattooed all over your face
For the world to see
Enough hassle just trying to breathe
Trying to maintain adulthood
While taking ten steps back into the hood
They say the regression is coming to an end
But by now you done lost all your friends
Because you lost your place in the process
And all your relationships have been in excess
Sleeping on their couch
Month after month you’ve gone without
You’ve prayed to be brought out
Of this recessional drought
And they say it’s coming, but when?
How in the world do we begin again?
30 years old.. Starting from scratch
Having to bow down and ask others to scratch your back
It ain’t about pride..
It’s the break in one’s stride..
That leaves them unstable.. Unsure
And a new beginning just don’t seem secure
They say the recession ain’t lasting much longer
After being weakened, how do you get stronger?
Gain intimacy with the Creator?
When you’ve been a worldly participator
Cause it seemed like the only way to go
No longer recognized the many ways to grow
Crying out.. Why me?
Better yet.. Why we?
You know.. My friends and family..
Blinded to the struggle universally..
But I swear when you apply for a million jobs and see..
Another get hired less qualified than thee
It’s easy to feel forgotten..
Heavy laden and down trodden..
What do we do when the storm is over..
And the debris weighs so heavily on our shoulders?
Will we call out to God, then?
Fall to our knees and thank Him for the end?
Tell Him that we need Him again?
Because He seems to be our friend again?
Will we shield our eyes to the truth that’s been?
That He’s been sustaining us since the beginning?
But we ignored Him because we didn’t win..
Instead we lost ourselves in a world of sin..
Because it felt good as we blew in the wind..
Like we had no foundation within..
Like we died and will only live when..
The recession comes to a complete end..
And we ain’t gotta continue to bend..
And break our backs to pretend..
No longer having to borrow, but lend..
They say the recession’s coming to an end..
And then what?
